It causes damage that would be dealt to you and permanents you control this turn to be dealt to a creature or planeswalker you choose instead, provided that permanent is still on the battlefield. Because it channels damage onto another permanent, it can buy time against lethal hits or mass damage effects but fails if you control no eligible target.
