It has cumulative upkeep {1}, is sacrificed whenever you play a card (this applies even if the card was played from a non-hand zone), and its {2} activated ability gains you 1 life. Because it dies when you cast spells and becomes progressively more expensive to keep, it functions mainly as a short-term life buffer rather than a long-term engine.
