Consume Spirit (10E 131, Foil) is a black sorcery from Tenth Edition that lets you choose X as part of its casting. It deals X damage to any target and you gain X life, but X must be paid with black mana beyond the {1}{B} cost. The card’s life gain equals the chosen X regardless of damage prevented, and if the target is illegal on resolution the spell does nothing.
