At your upkeep you remove all delay counters and for each removed you either pay {1}{W} or lose 1 life, creating a recurring tax or life-loss decision. The card functions as a damage-deferral tool that can interact with effects that state damage can’t be prevented because it replaces rather than prevents damage.
