Delaying Shield (ODY-17) is a white enchantment from Odyssey that replaces incoming damage to you by placing delay counters on itself. At the beginning of your upkeep you remove all delay counters and for each removed counter you lose 1 life unless you pay {1}{W}, creating a recurring decision between life payment and mana. The card can convert burst damage into repeatable upkeep costs, letting decks manage timing of life loss versus spending mana to avoid it.
