By paying X and tapping it you force an opponent to reveal cards from their library until they reveal an artifact or X cards are shown, with a revealed artifact entering the battlefield under your control and Thought Dissector being sacrificed. The non-artifact cards revealed this way go into that player's graveyard, enabling graveyard interaction or deck disruption for your strategy.
