As long as it is untapped, it prevents 1 point of combat damage from each creature that would deal combat damage to you, and it can be tapped for {2} to give attacking creatures +1/+0 until end of turn. It serves both as a mild damage mitigation tool and as a short-term buff source that can interact with attackers and combat tricks.
